A Geographical Indication is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin.
Geographical Indications are intellectual property rights that identify a good as originating from a specific place where a given quality, reputation or other characteristic of the good is essentially attributable to its geographical origin. GI tags are governed by the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.
Prevents unauthorized use of registered GI names, protecting consumers from counterfeit products.
Provides legal protection to traditional producers and helps them get better market value.
Safeguards traditional knowledge and promotes cultural identity of specific regions.
Maintains quality standards and traditional production methods specific to the region.
Association of producers, organizations, or governmental authority files application with the Geographical Indications Registry with detailed documentation about the product's origin, characteristics, and traditional production methods.
The application is examined for compliance with legal requirements. Once accepted, it's published in the GI Journal for public objections during a 3-month opposition period.
If no opposition or after resolution, the GI is registered for 10 years (renewable). Certificate of registration is issued with a unique GI tag number.
Authorized producers/artisans from the geographical area are registered and given permission to use the GI tag on their products after verification.
Each authentic product receives a unique verification code and QR tag. Consumers can verify authenticity through CGIS platform by scanning QR code or entering verification code.
